Hi there,

There is undeniable fear that many of us face every time we do a mobile-based transaction; many of us aren't easy with the idea because we don't know much about it!

We question how secure is it? Is my information saved in the system? How does it work? Is the mobile online payment/mobile transfer a real time process? Who has access to my information? All of these questions and more prevent us from having an easy breezy mobile payment services, such as Ooredoo Mobile Money

Therefore, I’m writing this blog with the hope that it would answer some of your burning questions!

Let us take it one step at a time, starting with Ooredoo Mobile Money’s background.

It’s the only service of its kind in Qatar. And since it is a financial service, Qatar Central Bank regulates it. The service comes to you with a partnership with MoneyGram and Qatar National Bank (QNB). However, you don’t have to have a QNB account to use mobile money service. Having that in mind, Mobile Money follows the same regulation that QNB has, for example, if sending money to hot zone areas aren’t supported by QNB, it would not be supported by Mobile Money as well. And also the customer deposits are kept safely in a master account in QNB.

So what is Mobile Money?

Ooredoo Mobile Money (OMM) is a mobile wallet service that allows you to register for a “Mobile Wallet or Account” so that you can deposit, withdraw, pay and send money in Qatar or abroad instantly through your phone. With partnership between Mobile Money and MoneyGram, you can send money to over 200 countries, which is considered to be the most successful use case so far. Besides you can also do you day to day chore of toping up hala account, pay shahry bill etc. directly from your mobile wallet..

What do you need to be able to use Mobile Money?

Simply, an Ooredoo mobile phone only! Again, you don’t need to have bank account. You must be the owner of your Ooredoo connection i.e. your SIM must be registered under your own QID.

How do you use it?

You need to have Mobile Money Wallet that you deposit money at, and then send it to wherever you want!

What is Mobile Money Wallet?

Mobile Money Wallet is a virtual account tied to your Mobile number that allows you to deposit, access or withdraw money using your Ooredoo mobile phone. Money is stored safely with QNB and is always visible to you through your mobile phone.

What are the types of Wallets that you could have?

There are two types. Mini Wallet that has a per transaction cap of money transfer of 1,000 QR

And Full Wallet with a cap of 4,000 QR.

How do you “cash in” money to your wallet? (Put money in your account)?

There is three ways to do so: by Ooredoo self-service machine (SSM), Ooredoo Shop, or Direct transfer from any QNB Bank Account using “QNB Mobile Payment service.”

After you finish your transaction (done with sending your money to the other end) how can they withdraw it?

After your successfully completed the international transfers transaction you will receive 8-digit “Reference Number” through SMS.

You need to share this reference number with the beneficiary so that the receiver can withdraw cash from any shop/place (known as MoneyGram agent locations) that has the sign of MoneyGram. Think of it as a supermarket that has Ooredoo sign at the door as an indicator that this place can provide you with scratch cards or so.

As for the process, it is instant! The receiver could have the money within few minutes.

Few important things to keep in mind:

  • Your mobile money account has to be under your name. Meaning? The QID used to open your mobile money wallet in your phone has to be in your name. Therefore, if you phone under someone else’s name (your father, friend, mother or so) you cannot open the account from your phone because Mobile Money Wallet wouldn’t be under your name.

  • When it comes to rate, it will fluctuate depending on currency exchange rate. However, Ooredoo Mobile Money offers you very competitive prices with minimal effort.

  • The only time when you will pay ZERO dirham for money transfer is when you do the transaction between a QNB account and Ooredoo Mobile Money Wallet. Thus, even when you’re sending money to another Qatari bank, such as CBQ or QIIB, small fee will apply. For more information on local transfer, click here!

  • People who live in Qatar, only, can use Ooredoo Mobile Money service, so other countries could only be receivers of this service and not senders.

  • Last, but not least!
    • Qatari population can use Mobile Money for various ways– they can pay their domestic staff salary using Mobile Money service so that their domestic staff can send money home directly form their Wallet without requiring to go the exchange house and stand in the long queue.
    • Salary can be paid using the “Local TRahnsfers” service – wallet to wallet transfer or if you have a QNB Bank Account then use “QNB Mobile Payment Service” to transfer money to their wallet directly from your QNB Bank Account. The transaction shall be listed to your bank account statement and be treated as a “proof of payment” if any dispute arises in future.
    • This proof allow staff to show evidence of a stable work and could help them in many applications, making their lives a bit easier.
