Ooredoo Qatar achieves 40 Gbps with next-generation TWDM-PON fiber technology

Ooredoo announced a major breakthrough for the Ooredoo Supernet with the successful pilot test of 40Gbps speeds on the Ooredoo Fibre network.  The test triumph comes after Ooredoo’s launch of 1Gbps Ooredoo Fibre services and the comprehensive trial of 10Gbps Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) technology earlier in the year.

The test deployed time and wavelength division multiplexed passive optical network (TWDM-PON) technology, which provides the functionality to update performance on Ooredoo’s current Supernet infrastructure and increase bandwidth capacity. The 40Gbps Ooredoo Fibre test represents the fastest Internet speeds ever achieved for an FTTH service in the nation. Ooredoo’s achievement positions Qatar as one of a few countries in the world to have successfully tested the new technology, demonstrating its ongoing push to offer a leading network experience.

Waleed Mohamed Ebrahim Al Sayed, Chief Executive Officer, Ooredoo Qatar, said: “This trial marks another step forward for the Ooredoo Supernet, which is evolving into one of the most advanced and capable networks in the world. Ooredoo plans to invest further in the latest network innovations, so that we can continue to deliver the best data experience for our customers and so that we can support the launch of a new generation of smart solutions.”

Although the commercial launch of 40Gbps Ooredoo Fibre is still some way off, Ooredoo is working to ensure that when able, the service will be fully-ready for home use.

Ooredoo’s successful test recorded aggregated upload and download speeds of up to 40Gbps on the network, meaning Ooredoo’s Fibre network will be positioned to deliver seamless ultra-broadband and Ooredoo tv services, as well future Internet-based ICT solutions and digital services, in the near future. When devices are available and the technology is mature, Ooredoo will be positioned to offer 40Gbps fibre services for its customers.

Ooredoo is working with Nokia and Huawei to test the 40Gbps Ooredoo Fibre services. Ooredoo has finished 2016 with an incredible number of network achievements, including 5G trials and a live demonstration of 5G-enabled robotics at Ooredoo’s HQ1 headquarters in Doha.

The company has also announced that its 4.5G Pro network is set to go live in early 2017, following trials that reached an impressive 1Gbps on mobile.
